U.S. Army Corp of Engineers McAlpine – Culvert Valve Noise and Vibration Investigation (August 18, 2009)

  • USACE’s Culvert Valve Devices were observed to be strained and chattering violently during operation.
  • VESCO performed Mechanical Integrity and Vibration Analysis of ram, pulley system bearings and cabling. Upon review of field-collected data VESCO determined that the lubrication-free bearings were the cause of the noise.
  • Analysis of Mechanical Integrity Inspection data revealed the chatter root cause.
  • Working closely with USACE and their contractor, VESCO developed and tested a procedure to resolve the remaining issues with successful results.
